Abstract
Early in the development of the F/A‐18 Super Hornet, poor transonic flying qualities threatened the program's success. The problems were unanticipated prior to first flight, and a significant departure from the excellent handling experienced with the early Hornet models. A lengthy Navy, industry, and NASA study targeted these questions, which have never been fully solved, with an eye to F‐35's development. Recent flight tests indicate that the F‐35 might also be susceptible. ![]()
